Supporting Nuclear Power Plant Safety
The concern for safety for all nuclear power plants has never been greater. Plant operators need to comply with safety regulations and show sensitivity to issues and threats that oppose current safety and security systems. A recent issue involves a Nuclear Regulatory Commission mandate for the pressurized water reactor fleet to address a generic safety issue (GSI-191) associated with the response of the emergency core cooling system (ECCS) to a hypothetical loss of coolant accident.
To respond to this issue, Alion has teamed up with some key industry companies to design, assess and test replacement ECCS hardware. Expertise in computational fluid dynamics combined with our state of the art chemistry/hydraulics laboratory has resulted in Alion being awarded contracts with more than one-third of the U.S. nuclear power plants.
Alion is helping to strengthen nuclear power plant safety through these efforts and is in the position to continue to support both current power plants and next generation facilities.
