Alion Awarded $1.7M Phase I Office of Naval Research Contract
Technology solutions company to develop demonstrator in support of Naval Seabasing
McLean, VA – February 20, 2007 – Alion Science and Technology, an employee-owned technology solutions company, today announced it was awarded a $1.7M Phase 1 award making them eligible for Phase II and Phase III awards on a $156M contract with the Office of Naval Research (ONR).
An Alion-led team will develop a prototype demonstrator for the Sea Base Connector Transformable – Craft (T-Craft).
“The purpose of the T-Craft is to develop and demonstrate the technologies to facilitate rapid transfer of materials to shore in support of Naval Seabasing,” commented Vice Admiral Scott Fry, (USN Ret), Alion Sector Senior Vice President and Manager of the Engineering and Integration Solutions Sector. “The Navy’s vision for Seabasing requires the ability to rapidly transfer cargo, stores and vehicles from the Seabase to the beach. Alion’s skilled engineers will help make this vision a reality.”
Seabasing will be used by the Armed Forces to build floating bases in areas in which formal ground bases cannot be established. The goal is then for production vessels that utilize the T-Craft technologies to be used as Seabase connectors, transporting wheeled and tracked vehicles through the surf zone and then onto the beach. The craft is envisioned to have three modes of operation: fuel-efficient or sea keeping mode, high-speed or shallow water mode and an amphibious mode to travel over sand bars and mud flats.
Engineers from Alion’s JJMA Maritime & Industrial Engineering Group will work on developing the technologies required to perform the T-Craft mission. Alion engineers will design a T-Craft ship platform on which these technologies will be integrated on to demonstrate the three part mission.
Other members of the Alion team include Raytheon Integrated Defense Systems, which is performing C3I design, and Nichols Brothers Boat Builders, who will ultimately build the craft.
